Brantford Courthouses

When it comes to family law matters, it's crucial to understand where your case should be filed.

In Ontario, a family law case can be heard in the municipality where either party resides. However, if children are involved, the case must be started in the municipality where the children habitually reside.

For Families in Brantford and the County of Brant

If your children live in the City of Brantford, the County of Brant (including Paris, Burford, Scotland, Oakland, Six Nations or St. George), your family law case should be filed in one of Brantford’s two courthouses. Understanding this requirement is vital to ensuring your case proceeds smoothly and without unnecessary delays.

Brantford's Superior Court of Justice

The Superior Court of Justice is where most family law cases involving divorce, property division, child custody (decision-making), parenting-time (formerly known as access), and support (child and spousal) are heard.

Brantford’s Ontario Court of Justice

The Ontario Court of Justice handles cases involving decision-making (custody), parenting-time (access), child support, children protection and adoption. While its role is more limited compared to the Superior Court of Justice because it does not deal with divorce or property issues, it is a critical part of the family law process.

Address:
Ontario Court of Justice
44 Queen St., Brantford, ON

This modern, two-story building is located at the corner of Queen St. and Darling St.  It is often referred to as the Darling St. Court.  Public parking is located across the street.
